ONE DAY 4-H

On Saturday, October 12th, Texas 4-H and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will celebrate the 5th anniversary of One Day 4-H!.  4-H’s way of saying “Thank You” to the state that has supported our program and youth for more than 105 years.  This year is even more special because our new sponsorship of One Day 4-H from TransCanada.  Through this sponsorship, we are able to offer some great new materials to promote, as well as recognize the 4-H members, clubs and counties for their outstanding service projects.

To date, more than 40,000 youth and adults have participated in more than 847 projects related to One Day 4-H.  Texas 4-H members have reached more than 1.1 million citizens and contributed more than $6.1 million in volunteer time to leave a positive impact across our state.  Please join us in recruiting your 4-H clubs and families to join in and make the 2013 One Day the largest one yet!

The new One Day 4-H website is up and running at http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/oneday.  The site includes all new redesigned materials from our partners at AgriLife Communications, new logos, and links for signing up projects and ordering t-shirts.  We have two additional marketing pieces in the final stages of production which include yard signs to place at project sites, as well as posters designed for placement at youth centers, schools, churches, etc.  These should be ready shortly and we will send information when they are ready for ordering.

Some FAQ’s about One Day 4-H:
Q:  Is there a certain project we must do?
A:  NO, One Day 4-H is for the 4-H members to decide their project.  We ask the youth to scan their communities, see what the needs are and then develop and implement a plan to address those needs. One Day 4-H is youth seeing what needs to be done and making the difference!

Q:  Does it have be done on a 4-H club level?
A:  NO, projects can be completed by one 4-H member or it can be done on a multi-county level.  Based on the project and degree of difficulty the project coordinator will decide how many people to recruit.

Q:  Can NON-4-H youth participate?
A:  YES, YES, YES!  What a great way to grow your 4-H program by having selected projects that 4-H members can recruit their friends not in 4-H to join and help out with.

Q:  Does our project have to take place on Saturday, October 12, 2013?
A:  No, we have designated One Day 4-H as the Saturday of National 4-H Week, but we realized based on some the organization the groups are working with, stock shows, and sporting events, some projects may be held during the week or even weeks before/after the 12th.  Even if it doesn’t take place, we still want the project to be part of One Day 4-H so please register and report the event.

Q:  Why do we have to “register” our event?
A:  By registering your event we have an idea of all the great projects taking place across the state.  Also, when you register your event, we ask for details about the location and time so we can work with AgriLife Communications to release media alerts to your local media with the encouragement to them to come by and check the project out. And who knows, it may also get you a personal visit from Dr. Boleman!

Q:  Do we have to work or partner with another organization for a project?
A:  No, One Day 4-H is designed so 4-H members can participate in service projects by themselves, with just 4-H, or partner with other community/church/service organizations.  The One Day 4-H resources even shows how an individual/club /county could distribute applications (applications provided on the website) to the community and you accept projects from individuals to do such things as helping mow a lawn, pick up trash, etc.  Check the website out!

Five years ago we would have never thought that our 4-H members, volunteers, parents, and Extension employees would have taken One Day 4-H to the level it is today.  Today, five other state 4-H Programs have adopted a One Day 4-H concept, our stakeholders see the impact that our youth are making  when it comes to giving back and making a difference, and 4-H members are having fun!  Thank you all for helping us make a difference in One Day.
