Texas 4-H Horse Show

The 2017 Texas 4-H Horse Show Rules and Regulations are attached to this email.  The rules and other information for the 2017 State 4-H Horse Show can also be found at this link: http://animalscience.tamu.edu/livestock-species/equine/state-4h-show/ or you can simply go to horse.tamu.edu and click on the show link.  The significant rule changes for this year are:
  • At District and State Shows, a horse may be ridden by only one 4-H’er per Class.  Separate age groups do NOT count as separate classes.  Example: a horse may be ridden in barrels by one 4-Her and Stakes by another 4-Her, provided that the 4-H’ers are siblings, the ownership requirements are met, and the horse has been properly Validated as a 4-H project (see validation rules). Exception: Drill and precision riding.  Futurity horses may never be ridden by more than one person.
    • Previously horses could only be ridden by one 4-Her per division.  This has been changed to one 4-Her per class, so that families with limited horses and multiple siblings can more easily participate.
  • Lower fence heights have been set for Juniors in the over fences classes.
  • Juniors will have an extended time (45 seconds) to complete their run in the roping division.

We are working to finalize the show schedule for this year and as soon as that process is complete, the schedule will be available on the website.  We will also be posting updates on our Facebook page “Texas 4-H Horse” https://www.facebook.com/texas4hhorse/.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and as always, Thank you for all that you do.

NEW!! Texas 4-H Explore Project Resources

The Texas 4-H Youth Development Program greatly values the project learning experiences that take place at the local level, helping youth increase knowledge of a specific topic while building leadership and life skills. In order to further support such project experiences, 12 different Explore Project Books have been developed. These can be used not only by County Extension Agents, but volunteers and older youth when leading and implementing project learning experiences.

Attached is a promotional piece that highlights the 12 books that are currently available, as well as additional books to be developed and released some time in 2017. In addition to six lessons, each book also contains an evaluation instrument that can be used to ascertain knowledge gained and support in-depth program plans.

We hope you find these Explore Project Books to be useful in equipping volunteers and enhancing the project experiences for youth. And, we welcome your feedback as we continue to develop 4-H youth development resources.

Thanks for all you do for Texas 4-H!

Texas Equine Ambassador Program

I find it hard to believe the Equine Ambassador Program is entering year 6 of existence. In that time, horse enthusiasts from across our great state have traveled to Gainesville for an exceptional training.  Equine Ambassadors have been busy assisting his/her County Extension Agents with equine programming and advocating for the industry. I am pleased to report that these exceptional leaders have represented Texas 4-H, the equine industry and animal agriculture with distinction and purpose. Equine Ambassadors have been at the forefront of advocacy efforts at the local, state, national and international levels.

New for 2017:
The course will still be headquartered in Gainesville, however a portion of the training will be held in Oklahoma City in conjunction with the NRHA Derby. Selected applicants will be treated to a behind the scenes educational experience of this storied event. Due to the difficulty in selecting applicants based on written information, 2017 applicants will submit a 2 minute video introduction and justification video along with their application.

Texas Livestock Ambassador Program

The Texas 4-H Livestock Ambassador Program is coming off of a truly groundbreaking year. In 2016, our program added West Texas A&M University and they graciously hosted our group along with Texas Tech University. The addition was an unquestioned success and WT has agreed to host the Livestock Ambassadors again in 2017. In August 2016, 19 Ambassadors boarded a plane in Houston headed for South America. We traveled to Uruguay and Argentina on an international agricultural experience. With visits to family farms, historic ranches, feedlot tours, major agricultural research institutes and various production facilities, Ambassadors were able to immerse themselves in cultural experiences exclusively found in these countries and develop new perspectives of international agriculture. As rewarding as it was for our Ambassadors to be recognized internationally, the program is successful only because of outstanding work you lead locally.

County Extension Agent support and coordination has been the driving force behind this successful program. Please consider approaching potential Texas 4-H Livestock Ambassadors in your county and recruiting he/she to the program.  Our hope is when they return from the course, you will find them to be eager to assist you with educational programs.  Below are the 2017 details and application link.
