Rabies Awareness & Prevention Poster Contest

The Texas Department of State Health Services would like to invite the kids at your school to participate in a Rabies Awareness & Prevention Poster Contest. Rabies is a viral disease that kills over 50,000 people every year around the world. Human deaths from rabies in the United States are very rare (approximately one death per year, almost exclusively due to rabies associated with bats). This is due to strict animal control laws, widespread pet vaccinations, and public health intervention in identified rabies-exposure cases. Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis is 100% effective when administered properly. However, the treatment is very expensive and requires multiple shots over a period of time.  

 

Skunks and bats are the most commonly affected species in Texas. Private residences and school grounds are the most common locations in Texas for exposure to rabid bats. Bat bites are not always noticeable and many people are unaware that exposure to bats poses a risk. Most of these rabies exposures are preventable through education. This is why we are encouraging school kids throughout Texas to become more aware about rabies and respecting bats and other wildlife from a distance. Students at your school can participate by entering a contest to design a poster promoting rabies awareness & prevention. There are prizes for students in Kindergarten through 12^th grade, and artwork from top-ranking posters may be used for future state sponsored public health educational projects. Prizes are provided by the Zach Jones Memorial Fund www.zachjonesmemorial.org/.

Hunter Safety Course - Texas 4-H Center

The Texas 4-H Center is excited to host Youth Hunter Education Camp in October. This camp is “Family Style” where each participant must be chaperoned by an adult, the family will stay in the Leadership Lodge (hotel style) for the weekend, all meals are provided and the Hunter Education Certification is included in the registration fee. All adults must be screened volunteers through 4-H Connect prior to camp.

Mark your calendars, Texas 4-H! One Day 4-H is October 13, 2018. This event allows 4-H members, parents, and volunteers help their communities through service projects. This event is flexible and can be as straightforward or intricate as you like.

All 4-H families, new and returning, are encouraged to log in and enroll in order to become an official 4-H member.  If you want to become an adult leader or volunteer we encourage you to enroll for the 2018-2019 year.  As you enroll in 4-H year for the year, here are some tips in using 4-H Connect:

·         If you already have a profile DO NOT re- create another one!

·         If you lost your email and password call the county Extension office. We can tell you your e-mail address and reset your password!

·         To be an official 4-H member in Texas 4-H you must have an ACTIVE profile in 4-H CONNECT!

·         An active membership will not be granted until the $20.00 participation fee is paid on 4-H Connect!

·         You cannot register for an event until your profile is ACTIVE!

·         When you are doing your re-enrollment for the 2016-2017 year please make sure you update your address, phone number, and email address.

·         Don’t wait until the last minute to enroll!

If you are planning to show at any of the major shows (Ft. Worth, San Antonio, etc) with your projects please fill out the order form inserted in the newsletter and return. Deadline to order your tags is August 24th. 

Reminders

o Sheep and Goat validation fee ordering process online and One order per county, submitted by the County Validation Chairperson.  DEADLINE IN AUGUST IS 24TH FOR $15 TAG ORDERS.  After that it will be $25 as I will not be in the office the 27th - 31st.

Texas Lamb Breeders Association (TLBA) tag numbers MUST be in the lamb’s ear and be recorded on the validation form at validation and be on the form at the time they are submitted. NO TLBA tag numbers will be added to the validation forms after the forms are submitted to the Sheep and Goat Validation of Texas program. Market lambs must have an GREEN TLBA tag to be eligible to compete in the San Angelo Stock Show or receive TLBA recognition at other major shows. Wether dams must have a BLUE TLBA ewe lamb tag to be eligible to compete in the San Angelo Wether Dam Show.

Club Managers/Leaders Meeting

The club managers and project leaders will meet at the county Extension office at 6:30 pm on August 14, to discuss the county 4-H event calendar for the new year.

The 4-H year is gearing up for the new year and you may have a few new faces at your club meetings. I hope that you will join me in giving a big 4-H welcome to those new folks!! As experienced members, I hope that you will help me to make new families feel welcome throughout the year.

Here are some suggestions to help new families through that confusing first year in 4-H.

☺  Explain things as they happen throughout the year.

☺ Make sure new families know that it’s alright to ask questions. 

☺  Advise new families of deadlines. Explain the major events that happen in 4-H such as county fair, record books, etc.

☺  Let new families participate at their own pace.  Involve them in activities, but allow them to participate at a level they feel comfortable.

Ranch Horse Program in conjunction with the TAMU Beef Cattle Short Course!

This year we will be hosting a

Ranch Horse Program in conjunction with the TAMU Beef Cattle Short Course! The event will take place on Sunday August 5^th from 8:00am to 2:30pm at the Thomas G Hildebrand Equine Complex.  Topics will include equine nutrition, health management, and forage management along with a session in the arena with professional horseman Jeff Williams to discuss starting and finishing the ranch horse prospect.  The cost of attendance is $50 at the door, or free for 2018 Beef Cattle Short Course participants.  We are asking attendees to please RSVP via phone, email or using the online link on the flyer so we can get an idea of how many to expect.

The Texas 4-H Food Challenge contest is one of the most popular contests in the 4-H program and this year it is getting a facelift! Changes have been made to the contest for several reasons:

 To reflect consistency with other state and national contests.
 To reflect comments and suggestions from agents, 4-H members, and coaches.
 To reflect easier to use resources for our youth.
 To reflect the need to continuously evaluate the success of our programs!

Please use this guide as you begin preparation for the new 4-H year. Youth Beef Cattle Short Course 2019

The BCSC youth program is a hands-on opportunity for youth to learn more about the beef cattle industry. All attending youth will have the opportunity to participate in a live cattle evaluation, beef quality demonstration, beef carcass competition, beef fabrication hands-on demonstration, sensory and preparation hands-on demonstration. Students will be fed breakfast Monday through Wednesday, lunch and dinner on Monday and Tuesday. They will also receive the 600+ page proceedings, ticket to the Famous Texas Aggie Prime Rib Dinner, refreshments and trade show admittance. All attending youth must be accompanied by a responsible adult who is registered and attending the BCSC. This program is limited to 45 youth so register early! Students must be between the ages of 13 and 18 to participate.

• Dairy Judging - Texas 4-H does not coordinate a state level contest. The Texas 4-H utilizes the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo Contest as our contest to determine who will represent Texas 4-H at the national contest opportunities.
• Youth MAY NOT participate in more than one contest in a day. A schedule has been posted which outlines what day each contest will be held. A schedule with time/locations will be posted in April with the registration information.

CLARIFICATION

Substitutions (Page 3)

• Only the number of 4-H members who qualify at district will qualify for state.
• Substitutions are allowed in the event of an emergency or unexpected circumstance and a team member can no longer compete at state.
• The purpose of making a substitution is to keep the original number of team members that competed at District eligible to compete at State.
• Substitutes must be 4-H members from the same county and certified as having competed at the district level in another 4-H contest.
• *NEW* The deadline for requesting any substitutions, except for an emergency, is the close of the regular Roundup Registration deadline. If substitutions occur during the late fee period, additional fees may be accessed.

MAXIMUM SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED BASED ON TEAM SIZE

       1 member            No Substitutions Allowed
             2 or 3                  1 member
             4 or 5                  2 members
             6 or more            3 members

Substitutions of team members may involve a monetary fee depending on the time of substitution.

Intermediates participating as seniors in Invitationals (page 6)

Intermediate Age youth can compete as a Senior to complete a team for SOME Invitational Contests. Those choosing to do so, will be eligible for awards in that level only. Intermediates moving up would be considered as Seniors for ranking. This will NOT be allowed for the following contests: Hippology, Healthy Lifestyles, Livestock Skill-A-Thon, Poultry Judging, and Soil Judging as these contests allow for national competition open to Seniors aged youth only.

Dance Project members hosting Dance for Kaufman County 4-Her's

Isaac Stecher and the Dance Project would like to invite Kaufman County 4-H'ers on May 25th starting at 6:30 pm to their last Dance project meeting.  

It would be a pot-luck style event hosted at The Stecher Red Barn with music and dance floor provided. It would be a casual dance (like swing and waltz songs as well as the normal country 2-step) .

Very Cool Record Book Resource

It is May 15th SSOO that means less than 2 months to recordbook and award applications to be turned in (June 8th to be exact). So many questions are heading my way about the 4-H record books and how to prepare to do them. I found out that the last link was not working for some so I am attempting to fix it.

Horse Project News!!!

East Region 4-H Horse Show

The East Region 4-H Horse Show will be held Friday and Saturday, June 29-30th at the Henderson County Fair Park, in Athens, TX.  Grounds will be open at 3-9 pm on Thursday, June 28th, for early arrival and early check-in with registration beginning at 7am on Friday, to the end of the last class on Friday and starting again at 7am on Saturday.  All entries for the East Region 4-H Horse Show will be done on 4-H Connect.  4-H Connect will be open starting on May 7th, and closes at midnight on Friday, May 25^th   NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED NO EXCEPTIONS. The entry sheet is only a tool for the contestants and parents to work from before going on 4-H Connect.  It is not a valid means of entry and will not be accepted. 

On Thursday starting at 10 am there will be a clinic for young riders to get help with show day prep.  Equine Ambassadors will be present to help work on fitting tack, prepping for showmanship classes (ie-grooming, fitting, making sure the halter is fitted correctly, and helping with the pattern) plus riding basics.  Cost is $20 per rider.

On Thursday night June 28^th at the Henderson County Fairgrounds in Athens Texas there will be Barrel Exhibition and Pole Bending Exhibition starting at 7:30 pm for $10 for 3 runs.

Also, they will host a Trail class practice starting at 7:30 pm where the actual trail patterns for the next day’s trail classes will be set for exhibitors to see and ride over the course.  The practice will cost $10 for 15 minutes to be in the arena on the course.  Only 5 horses will be allowed in each time slot, so plenty of room to practice the course.  In addition someone from the show will be in the arena to help with figuring out the obstacles.  You do not have to be entered in the class to practice the Trail class.

District Adult Horse Leader Training – May 19^th

The District Horse Program Committee is working on opportunity for the 4-H horse project leaders. On May 19th working with TAMU Commerce Horse Unit we will be starting a 3 part series on the horse project. The First Part is a Hands on and Resource Sharing. The Second will be for Adult Horse Project Leaders on the "Riding Program". This will be held in the fall (August/ September) and then the third will be another in December. Those leaders that attend the First training will receive a discount on the next two workshops.  Registration will be on 4-H Connect.

Multi County Camp Registration Deadline coming up!!!

Multi County Camp – July 9-11 

Planning for the Multi County Camp in Lone Star, Texas is once again started.  This year a full three days of fun are centered on the Theme – “Explore 4-H.”  Come have fun with 4-H’ers from 6 other District IV counties.  4-H’ers from 8 yrs and in 3^rd Grade to 18 Yrs old has fun at the Lake front camp. Registration is $115.00 for 3 days and 2 nights of fun and activities.  (Registration is Due May18th.)

This will be Nomination Night for the elections for the 2018-2019 Council Officers.  So it will be really important that each club is represented.  If you are unsure who your reps are please contact Carrie at the extension office.  Those youth that have attended 50% or more of the council meetings are eligible to run for office.

Elections will be June 9^th at 1 pm after record book judging.

2018 State Fair of Texas Lamb/Goat Validation

State Fair of Texas will be held September 28 – October 21, 2018.  If you bought a tag for the State Fair Market Goat and Lamb shows we will be tagging on June 22^nd   at the Kaufman FFA Show Barn at 3:30 p.m.

State Steer Tag In – June 21st

Major Steer Tag In will be held at Dr. Risinger’s Vet Clinic in Terrell on June 21st , at 6:30 p.m. Please Do Not arrive before 6:30 p.m. This is for ALL MAJOR shows validation ONLY!!!

2018 Fall Heifer Validation

Fall Show Heifer Validation is for any fall junior heifer shows.  We will be validating on June 22^nd at the Kaufman FFA Barn at 3:30 p.m.  We are verifying ownership, registration paper upload and physical validation. A $15.00 per heifer fee will be collected. PLEASE DO NOT UNLOAD YOUR HEIFERS TILL DIRECTED.  IF your heifers are not halter broke bring them to the Steer Validation on June 21^st at Risinger’s Vet Clinic.

** Heifers validated last fall or summer will not need to be validated unless there has been a change in breed or ownership. **

***YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE YOUR PAPERS IN YOUR NAME AND HEIFER AT THE VERIFICATION DATE. Make sure your heifer is tattooed and the tattoo is correct. If it is not, we will not validate your heifer. ****
