Club Officer Boot Camp Training

The District Council 4-H Officers are hosting a 4-H Officer Boot Camp on Saturday, August 22 to get club officers off to a good start. The training will be from 9 am to 4 pm at TAMU-Commerce Sam Rayburn Student Center. It is for 8 years old and up.  So future club officers UNITE!!! This will be a great day of fun and learning!!  Cost is $15 per participant!!

Learn YOUR role as a 4-H officer and become 4-H Strong.  The District Council Officers invites all club and county 4-H Officer (and future officers) to attend a 1-day boot camp where you will strengthen your ability to be a leader.

The New Year Begins-Club Meeting Schedule for the 2015-2016 4-H Year

The new 4-H Year is about to begin.  We will be sending out information soon about re-enrolling for the new year but here is the first meetings of the year.

·   Crandall 4-H – August 11, Crandall Community Room, 6:30 pm Community Club focusing on the total 4-H program.  Club Manager – Jennifer Hiser

·   Council – August 18^th, Extension Office, 6:30 pm For all 4-H Teen Leaders that are 13 – 18 years old.  This Youth Board teaches leadership and team building to teen leaders.  And assists with bringing all of the clubs together and keeping everyone in touch with the Kaufman County 4-H Program

·   Livestock Project Club – August 20, Showgrounds. 6:30 pm ALL animal projects (rabbit, cattle, swine, lambs, goats, dairy and horses.) meet during this time.  The meetings start with team building for the youth and the adults meeting to get dates and information about up coming deadlines.  The youth then have a short meeting to divide out to their for project  specific fun.

2015 Texas Livestock Project Conference

Please hold September 11-13, 2015 for the 2015 Texas Livestock Project Conference in San Antonio, Texas. The 2014 conference, held at the Heart O’ Texas Fair and Rodeo, was a huge success. This conference provides an incredible opportunity to build livestock project knowledge, management, and skills. County Extension Agents and Agriculture Science Teachers should also expect to gain an inside look into major livestock show management and engage major livestock show officials in meaningful discussions. The conference will secure a stellar group of nationally recognized  livestock judges that are consistently judging Texas major livestock shows to provide their professional philosophies.  A select committee of County Extension Agents and Agricultural Science Teachers  will be identified to provide leadership to the event. These committee members will be selected from the Animal Industries Committee  and the Major Livestock Show Advisory Committee. We are pleased with the interest and momentum generated from the conference last year. Much more information will follow.

2016 Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Junior Commercial Steer Feeding Management Contest

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo will be limiting the number of the exhibitors for the 2016 Junior Commercial Steer Feeding Management Contest. This decision was made due to facility and time limitations we have to conduct this contest. The first 175 exhibitors to submit an intent form will have a space reserved in the contest.
Electronic submission of intent forms will be available the first week of July and remain open until 175 intent forms have been received or Oct. 1, 2015, the deadline for original scale tickets to be submitted, whichever comes first. Once an exhibitor has received confirmation of the intent form being received, exhibitors may purchase steers and mail in original scale tickets for the 2016 Junior Commercial Steer Feeding Management Contest. Each pen of steers will consist of 3 steers as in past years.
Additional information regarding the entry intent form will be sent electronically to AST/CEA's and past Junior Commercial Steer exhibitors in June. The information will include instructions for the entry intent form submission, the link to the submission page, and the date and time that the form will be available.
Should you want to be a new exhibitors for 2016, please contact me so that we can get on the list for "new exhibitors" 

TEXAS 4-H HORSE SHOW T-SHIRTS ARE ON SALE!

Shirts will be available for pick-up at the Texas 4-H Horse Show in Abilene on the East Concourse on the South end of the Coliseum from 1pm-3pm on Sunday, Monday, Thursday, and Friday. Shirts will not be sent directly to 4-H members. Any shirts not picked up will be
sent to their County Extension Agent.

2015 Veterinary Science Summer Camp - June 8-11

The goal of the Texas 4-H Veterinary Science camp is to provide experiential learning
opportunities for students participating in the Veterinary Science Certificate Program
(VSCP) where they can learn basic clinical skills for small animal and large animal veterinary
medicine under the direction of a veterinarian. This camp will allow participants to complete
33 of the 78 clinical skills hours required for the VSCP and certification process.
• Cost $125.00
(includes room, meals, materials, and Texas 4-H Roundup registration)
• Limited to the first 20 members
(preferred for members to be in an organized Vet Science Program)
• Sign-up through 4-H CONNECT under 2015 4-H Roundup
(April 13, 2015- May 15, 2015)
• Open to 4-H members 11-18 years old
• Parents can drop their kids off on Monday and pick up on Thursday after contest
• Chaperones and transportation provided for all participants

The 4th Annual Healthy Lunchtime Challenge

RECIPE CONTEST: The 4^th Annual Healthy Lunchtime Challenge is currently underway! Kids 8-12 are invited to join a parent or guardian in creating an original MyPlate-inspired recipe that is healthy, tasty, and affordable. One winner from each U.S. state, territory and the District of Columbia will be selected and have the opportunity to attend a Kids’ “State Dinner” at the White House this summer where a selection of the winning recipes will be served. 2015 Multi County Camp - Unleash the Clover

We are so glad to announce 4-H Multi-County Camp 2015 registration is open.  We know there are many opportunities and choices when it comes to summer camp – we thank you for considering 4-H Multi-County Camp!  “Unleash the Clover” is this year’s theme.  The campers will experience 4-H projects & how they relate to the theme.  Camp will be held at Lakeview Baptist Encampment in Lone Star Texas on July 6-8, 2015.  We have a lot of fun activities and events planned.  A $115.00 (non-refundable) registration fee and your camp forms are due IN the ­­­Kaufman County Extension Office by May 15^th, 2015.  If interested please contact the extension office for a full registration packet.

2015 Discover Science Method – Poster Contest Rules. We made several changes this year and those changes are listed below (and were originally sent out in the fall).

In an effort to increase participation in this contest, we have decided to align our contest rules to those of FFA, State Fair of Texas and San Antonio Livestock Exposition. This will make it easier for our youth to be able to use the same science project at multiple contests.

·         New Categories: (Descriptions are included in the attachments) (Pgs. 1-2)

o   Biochemistry/Microbiology/Food Science

o   Environmental Science/Chemistry/Earth Science

o   Animal Sciences

o   Plant and Soil Science

o   Engineering/Physics

o   Consumer Product Testing

·         New Scorecard

o   The same scorecard will now be used for all age divisions.

o   Scorecard does have scores based on the notebook, display, and interview

o   Attached in a separate document

·         Contest Overview/Layout (Pg. 2-3)

o   5-10 minute presentation

o   10-12 minutes question session with the judges

o   An individual can participate or be on a team up to six (6) members

·         Research Notebook (Pg. 3)

o   Will be a factor on the scorecard

o   A guideline for what to include in the notebook is included in the attachment

·         Poster Guidelines (Pg.2-3)

o   These have changed, please make of the new size requirements.

o   Poster dimensions: No larger than 48’’ wide by 30” deep (the distance from front to back) 108” high (from floor to top, includes table if project is on table top), unfolded. Failure to meet these requirements will result in disqualification. Please note that the tables vary per convention location are generally 24” wide.

o   Posters must stand upright on a table or the ground once unfolded.

o   The poster should include an abstract, introduction, background, methodology, results and/or conclusions.

o   Items not adhered to poster must fit on the tabletop within the dimension of the unfolded poster.  Nothing may be hung from the top of the poster (lights, banner, shelf, etc.) that will be outside of the above mentioned poster dimensions.

Please note that you must enter on 4-H Connect under Texas 4-H Round-Up as well as submit the Entry Form, County Agent Approval Form, Human Vertebrate Endorsement and Non-Human Vertebrate Endorsement to Megan Logan at mmlogan@ag.tamu.edu by May 26, 2015.

Virtual Volunteer Conference today and tomorrow

In 2014-15, the Texas 4-H Youth Development will be sponsoring a virtual volunteer conference on a quarterly basis. Workshops will be conducted during the day and evening hours using AgriLife Extension’s TTVN WebMeeting system.
