ENTRY FEE:  $50 Per Pen – Entry Form due at tag in for Commercial Heifer Division

INTRODUCTION: THIS PROJECT IS NOT A PART OF THE ELLIS COUNTY YOUTH EXPO MARKET DIVISION, THEREFORE, ELLIS COUNTY 4-H & FFA MEMBERS CAN SELL IN THIS PROGRAM AS WELL AS IN THE ELLIS COUNTY YOUTH EXPO MARKET AUCTION. (EXAMPLE: YOU CAN SELL A PEN OF HEIFERS IN ADDITION TO A SWINE, LAMB, BROILERS, RABBITS, STEER OR GOAT).

1. This show is limited to projects owned, fed and cared for by Ellis, Hill, Kaufman, Navarro, and Johnson County 4-H and FFA members in good standing and under the supervision of the Agricultural Science Teachers and County Agents. Participants must be enrolled in a public or private school of less than college level for the 2014-2015 school year and must have entered 3^rd grade and be 8 years of age, and be in good standing with their FFA chapter or 4-H club.

2. Eligibility Forms will be required at Check In for show.  An exhibitor ineligible, according to his/her school administration, will not be permitted to have an entry shown at the Ellis County Youth Commercial Heifer Show and Sale. Students not eligible the entire length of show will not be permitted to have an entry.

3. All heifers must be owned and in possession of the exhibitor on and after tag-in date.

4. Tag In for Commercial Heifer entries will begin on May 2, 2015 from 9am - 1pm at the Triple L Hereford Ranch, 1170 Lumkins Rd, Forreston TX, 76041. See map on last page!  From 9-11:30am will be a “hands on” Tag-In opportunity for youth exhibitors to actually administer the ear tags and any shots needed in a safe environment under supervision. From 11:30-1pm will be a Beef training program with lunch provided.  (The goal is to be able to provide BQA points for certification with the training)  There will also be a door prize but you must be present to win.

5. In the event that more than one exhibitor in a family tags in heifers, the heifers may be tagged in under the family name. However, the heifers must be declared to an individual exhibitor upon final check-in at the show.

6. Commercial heifer entries are highly encouraged to come from producers in Ellis or participating and surrounding counties, but must be purchased within the state of Texas.

7. Commercial heifer entries must be less than two years of age at tag-in date. Any heifer with eruption of adult incisors will not be allowed to enter.

8. All heifers must be Brucellosis calf hood vaccinated by the initial tag-in. They must have a metal calf hood vaccination tag and a legible tattoo in their ear. If the tag is missing or the tattoo is unable to be read, the heifer will not be eligible to be tagged in for the show.

            a). All heifers will be vaccinated for the following before or at tag-in:

Brucellosis -- Calf hood (4 to 12 months)

b.)  All heifers must be dehorned and scared over before the show date of October 24, 2015.                     

9. Heifers will not be required to be halter broken; however, the heifers must be in such disposition that would allow close viewing by the judge.

10. A pen of two heifers must be exhibited for competition. A minimum of two and a maximum of three heifers may be tagged in at the initial tag-in. Each exhibitor can validate up to 3 heifers, but can only show 1 pen of 2. If a heifer or heifers have calves at side they may be exhibited for competition. If a heifer is unable to compete, the remaining heifer will be eligible to sell in the sale, but will be ineligible for competition. Exhibitors are allowed to bring the 3^rd heifer to the show to be placed in a separate pen at check in and held thru out the show.  All extra heifers will be held together in the designated pen. There will be a $15 charge (due at check in) for the care and holding of the third heifer.  This allows exhibitors the opportunity to sell the third heifer to a buyer attending the auction and saves both parties additional hauling.

11. All heifers must comply with Texas Animal Health Commission rules governing entry in the show. All heifers entering show must have current health papers.

12. All bred heifers must be palpated at least 60 days pregnant, as stated on official health papers after inspection by a certified veterinarian. A copy of the paperwork is due by October 1, 2015 to ECYCHSS in care of the Ellis County Extension office 701 S.I-35 E Waxahachie, TX 75165.  You may also email paperwork to ecychss@gmail.com

13. Bring original health papers to check-in at the show. The original will go to the buyer, one copy is for the Texas Animal Health Commission and one copy is for the show committee.

14. Heifers will be checked in for the show on October 22, 2015 from 3pm to 9 p.m. at the Ellis County Youth Expo Center.

15. A record book of the exhibitor’s heifer project must be turned in to the committee.

           

a)             Record book must be turned in at check in on October 22, 2015. Do not turn in record book to the Ellis County Extension Office or Agriculture science teachers. Must be typed and may have photos.  Senior Sales Flyers are due October 1, 2015

b)         Completed CURRENT academic eligibility forms must be turned in to show officials at Check In on October 22, 2015. DO NOT INCLUDE THEM IN YOUR RECORD BOOK!

•    Failure of an exhibitor to turn in the record book by the due date of October 22, 2015 and participate in the interview session will result in complete disqualification from the show. This disqualification results in exhibitor(s) being eliminated from any record book awards AND from showing and selling their pen of heifers in the Ellis County Youth Commercial Heifer Sale. Disqualification will result in forfeiture of all consignment and entry fees.

           

            c)         The record book/interview portion of this contest will have a junior and senior division. Juniors will be 9 years old (or 8 in the 3rd grade) to 13 years old. Seniors will be 14 to 19 years old. Ages are to be determined as of August 1, 2014. Record books are due at Show Check In. NO EXCEPTIONS!

16. Pens of heifers will be judged on October 24, 2015 at 9 a.m.  

17. Since this is a terminal show, all heifers must sell in the Commercial Heifer Sale on October 24, 2015 at 1 p.m. Heifers will sell as a pen, with the number of heifer’s times the money bid being the total amount received. A 5% commission will be deducted from each sale.

18. In order to comply with the national law on the Beef Check-Off, two dollars ($2.00) will be deducted from the sale price of each heifer.

19. All heifers entered in this program and sold become property of the buyer and will remain sold. It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to make arrangements with the buyer on delivery or pick up of the heifers.

20. All exhibitors will be required to feed, water, and care for their heifers until the heifers are released to the buyer Saturday, October 24, 2015 at 5 p.m. and must be removed from the grounds no later than 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 25, 2015.

21. All exhibitors will have an option to recite or read a summary of their project while standing in front of their pen of heifers before their heifers are sold at the auction. The summary should focus on the heifers, their breed and sire breed.

22. All exhibitors will be pre-stalled with numbers on pens prior to arrival.

23. The Herdsman award, Jr. Division and Sr. Division, will be given out at the Heifer Sale to the exhibitor who scores highest on the combination of the interview, recordbook and of the condition of their pen area and care for their heifers throughout the show and sale.

24. The Commercial Heifer Committee reserves the right to amend these rules with the approval of the Board of Directors of the Ellis County Youth Commercial Heifer Show and Sale.

25. Commercial Heifer Committee act as agents only for the exhibitors. All guarantees are between buyers and sellers.

26. There will be no harassment of the judges prior to, during or after the show. The judge will give reasons for the placings and that will be considered adequate explanation of the placings.

27. This program is designed to be educational and beneficial to the youth of Ellis County. Any parent or exhibitor who does not adhere to the rules pertaining to the Commercial Heifer Show may be banned for a period of one (1) year from exhibition in this program.

28. Each exhibitor in the Commercial Heifer Auction Sale shall report to the Ellis County Youth Expo, Sunday, October 25, 2015 at 2:00 pm for grounds clean-up. Failure to report will result in a $50.00 deduction from the exhibitor’s check.

29.  All heifers must be dehorned, or naturally polled, by the pregnancy test date. NOTE: Heifers should be dehorned early to allow time for healing.

30.  In the event that an exhibitor’s heifer(s) loses an official Ellis County Youth Commercial Heifer Show and Sale tag, it is the responsibility of the exhibitor to notify the Commercial Heifer Show Committee as soon as possible so the heifer may be re-tagged.

31.  There will be no alcohol allowed on the grounds during the show or sale!

32.  There will be (2) Two divisions in the show:

a.     Open Division   Heifers 16 months and younger

b.     Bred Division     Heifers 17 months and older

33.  All exhibitors will be required to have passed the Quality Counts Verification test for their age group. Each Exhibitor will need to have their Quality Counts Verification number by tag-in. – see listing on important dates

34.  Sale order will be Overall Grand, Reserve overall Grand, and then the next highest placing Bred Pen, followed by the next highest placing open pen.

(Please be aware…Mark Arnold will be offering a CEU cattle class on Friday and there will be potential buyers in the class.  They will take a portion of class time to view and discuss the cattle.

Due to the class there will be someone on hand if you would like to come Friday morning to drop off your cattle early)

County Food Show Interview Prep
Presentation.
All contestants should prepare an oral presentation.  Each contestant will start with a maximum three-minute presentation to introduce themselves and their dish.  You should describe your inspiration in choosing your recipe and how it relates to the theme, "Bringing Texas to the Table".  

a.  Clover Kids & Juniors  – Introduce yourself to the judges and will then be interviewed.
Clover Kids:  30 seconds to one minute.
Juniors: 1 minute to 2 minutes

b.   Intermediates & Seniors- Presentation

Each contestant will start with a maximum three-minute presentation to introduce themselves and their dish, and may describe briefly their inspiration in choosing that dish, or their experience in 4-H and the Food and Nutrition Project.

Intermediates:  2 minutes to 3 minutes.
Seniors: three-minutes

In this time, participants should introduce themselves and their dish, and describe their inspiration in choosing that dish and how it relates to current theme.  Participants may also include their experience in 4‐H and the Food and Nutrition Project.  Do not spend the entire time giving the recipe.  Include only challenging parts of the preparation, experimentation with recipes, etc.

Livestock Project reminders

This is a great reminder of the work it takes to make a great "winning" project. Does not have to be a livestock projects, it could be any 4-H project. The Crane Show Pigs blog (http://CraneShowPigs.com) always have some really good blogs for growing youth into a project and this one hit a topics especially this time of year that I get to hear about. So this is a reprint of that blog and really good reading.

"This is the time of year when we got lots of calls. Inquiries on pigs, appointments, prices – you name it. We truly enjoy visiting with each of you and answering all your questions.

However, we are noticing a disturbing trend. We get more and more inquiries, like this one, every season. And, it goes like this:

Caller: I want a champion showpig, can you help me?

Us: We do raise show pigs, and many of our feeders are very successful. What exactly are you looking for?

Caller: Well, I want to beat (so-and-so). They (the so-and-so family), beat us every year. I’ve been watching you on Facebook, and I want a champion pig like the one that was just pictured.

Us: Yes sir, that was a very good pig. That family did a phenomenal job, they’re good feeders and they work very hard.

Caller: And, we want to win…

The caller goes on and shares about their feeding program (a self feeder filled with a mix made at the local Co-Op. ‘I don’t have time to hand feed, I work and we’re gone a lot on the weekends); and their exercise program (‘we start walking a few weeks before fair – kids have to walk every afternoon before they go to the pool’).

Basically, they want to beat the so-and-so family, by investing the least amount of TIME and EFFORT into their swine project.

If you want to be successful, I challenge you develop a brand-new mindset this show season. Many of you know that we are a die-hard basketball family. Our entire family plays ball and there’s even an indoor, full-size court next to the kids’ show barn. Basketball is a lot like showing livestock: You’re not going to win a championship without practicing; without being in shape and eating right; and without working hard both in and out of the gym.

Folks – if your family refuses to put time and effort into the project, then no breeder out there is going to be able to help you. Even if you could afford to buy the most expensive pig out there, your chance of success with that pig is slim to none.

And as for the cost of livestock, think of it this way: Expensive basketball shoes don’t make the player. It is hard work, dedication and determination that is going to take you and your sneakers to the game. Do champion players often choose one brand of shoes over another? Yes, absolutely they do. Winners want a proven product, something that meets their demands and is going to be worth the investment of both their time and money. Proven products are used for a reason, no matter if it is basketball shoes, show feed or successful breeding programs.

Winning starts with a desire to succeed. Take that and mix in a pig with great genetics, fuel it with proven feed, and quality time spent in the barn – and you’ve got a recipe for a memorable show season. There are NO shortcuts. There are NO quick fixes. There are NO substitutions.

Don’t blame the refs, and don’t blame the judges. They are simply calling it like they see it.

Don’t blame the coach, and don’t blame the breeder/extension agent/ag teacher. Their job is to guide you, not do the work for you.

Don’t blame the other team, and don’t blame other exhibitors. Their job is to show up & work hard, it’s not their fault if you weren’t prepared.

Don’t blame the equipment, and don’t blame the animal. Neither one will be in their prime, if you don’t care for them.

Your success starts with you. I challenge you to have a positive attitude and an athlete’s work ethic. If you want to win this season, start stepping up your game at home. Your efforts, or lack thereof, will speak for themselves on show day."

Beef Project Members!! Showmanship Workshop - Monday Night - Starting at 4 pm

Beef Project Members!! Showmanship Workshop has been moved to Monday Night at the Showgrounds starting at 4 pm.  Brian Ivy and Mike Luna will be there to help you with your beef projects and showmanship.  This is a come and go workshop so if you can not get there right at 4 pm that is ok we will be there till about 6:30.  Eric DaBorge will also be there to trim hooves on the Beef Projects. Cost for Hoof trimming is $35.

Rabbit Project workshop - Saturday, January 10th, 10 am to 12 pm

RABBIT PROJECT MEMBERS... if you would like to know about or would like help with your rabbit project we will be working with the rabbit projects on Saturday from 10 am to 12 pm.  This time has been moved up from 1 pm to help out with any weather that might be moving in.  If you don't have a rabbit but would like to know more come visit!!  :)

On Saturday we will be conducting the tagging in (validation) of the County Fair Market Lambs, Market Goats, and commercial Boer Does.  We will start at 8 am and go to 11 am.  Just because you have a tag in ear you need to be for sure you have done an ENTRY FORM!! If you have a question whether you are entered or not call and ask  :)

Generation Next: Our Turn to Ranch Schools

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service would like to invite you to register for a Generation Next: Our Turn to Ranch School this Spring. Each 2-day school will have expert presenters on these topics:

·         Marketing your product and yourself

·         Using technology to your benefit

·         How to set up grazing and wildlife lease agreements

·         Multigenerational ranching

·         Understanding market fluctuations

·         Land management techniques

·         Coping with invasive species

·         Alternative operations to add to the business

The Generation Next Schools are specifically targeting children or grandchildren of landowners, although the schools are open to all who are interested in attending.  Staying connected to the land and finding your place in the family ranch can be difficult, but these schools are specifically designed to provide ideas and direction to make multigenerational ranching successful.  Select from 3 Schools in 2015:

2. Stephenville, TX: March 12-13, 2015

3. Corpus Christi, TX: April 9-10, 2015

The registration fee is $100 per school (or $75 if a currently enrolled college student) until 2 weeks prior to the course.  This fee includes 2 full days of classes from expert instructors, a resource notebook and jump drive, 5 meals, and a Generation Next: Our Turn to Ranch School Completion Certificate at the end of the course.  Registration will be limited to the first 50 participants, so sign up early!

EVENT INFORMATION

1.  Date.   January 18-19, 2015

2.  Locations.Drop Off:  TAMU-C Rockwall, 2610 Observation Trail, Rockwall, TX 75032
Pick Up:  Shenaniganz, 1290 East Interstate 30, Rockwall, TX 75087

3.  Schedule. 

7 p.m.            Arrival at TAMU-C facility in Rockwall
Educational Workshops
11 p.m.          Transported to Shenaniganz by approved adult chaperones
Fun and Games
6 a.m.            Checkout and Depart from Shenaniganze

4.  Registration.  Registration will close midnight on January 7, 2015.  Registration includes the following activities:  Unlimited bowling, arcade games, 2-story laser tag, black light miniature golf, billiards, shuffle board, pizza buffet and drinks, mechanical bull rides (with parent consent only), and indoor go-cart rides will be available throughout the night.  4-H will have its own private VIP bowling lanes, dance floor and lounge.  The registration fee is $45 per person (youth and adult).  This fee also includes pizza and drinks provided at Shenaniganz.

Each participant is required to have all medical release and emergency contact information completed and up-to-date on 4-H Connect prior to attending.  Additional waivers from Shenaniganz are required as well.  (attached below)   Youth may only ride the mechanical bull if given permission (by completing the waiver) by parent/guardian.

TOTALLY COOL NEW PROJECT!!!! Alpaca Wool Challenge and Community Service Project

TOTALLY COOL NEW PROJECT!!!! Come on Kaufman County lets Do It!!! The 4-H Clothing and Textiles project has a wonderful new opportunity for our 4-H members to learn and grow in their project work; the Alpaca Wool Challenge and Community Service project.

The Alpaca Wool Challenge and Community Service Project is a new statewide activity that unites Alpaca wool producers with Texas 4-H youth. 4-H members are challenged to create a knitted, crocheted, or woven item using yarn provided by TxOLAN Alpaca Association Alpaca producers. The skeins of wool provided range from 50 yards to 200 yards. Items can be constructed by either an individual or a group. All completed items will be sent to College Station to be judged. An entry fee of $15 will be charged for each item entered. Following the contest all items will be returned to be donated to a charity of the person or group choosing.

New Changes for the State 4-H Share the Fun contest!!

We are excited to announce some changes (and a few reminders) for the 2015 Texas 4-H Roundup Share-The-Fun contest!!

1.       NEW!  Share-The-Fun will be split over two days at Texas 4-H Roundup!

a.       Wednesday: Poetry/Prose, Vocal, Choreographed Routines, and Dramedy

b.      Thursday:  Musical/Instrumental, Solo/Band Performance, and Celebrate 4-H

2.       NEW! A “Best of Show” will be selected each evening by audience participation through texting in votes.

3.       A total of 7 categories will be offered for the 2015 contest.

a.       Celebrate 4-H

b.      Choreographed Routines

c.       Dramedy

d.      Musical/Instrumental

e.      Poetry/Prose

f.        Solo/Band Performance

g.       Vocal

4.       Don’t forget!  Last year an additional acting category was been added called Dramedy. 

5.       The first and second place district winners in each of the seven (7) categories qualify for Texas 4-H Roundup.

6.       The first and second place entries in each category from District advancing to Texas 4-H Roundup may be from the same county.  If a county has an entry in each category at District and each wins first or second, then they can all advance to Texas 4-H Roundup.

7.       Please note the Texas 4-H Roundup rule that went into effect last year:  4-H members MAY enter the same category in which they have previously been part of a first place entry at Texas 4-H Roundup. 

8.       There will be an Orientation on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at 4:00 pm for Poetry/Prose, Vocal, Choreographed Routines, and Dramedy.  There will be an Orientation on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at 4:00 pm for Musical/Instrumental, Solo/Band Performance, and Celebrate 4-H.  

9.       There will be an Awards Assembly on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at 2:00 pm for Poetry/Prose, Vocal, Choreographed Routines, and Dramedy.  There will be an Awards Assembly on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at 2:00 pm for Musical/Instrumental, Solo/Band Performance, and Celebrate 4-H.

4-H Paper Clover Campaign will end Oct 19th!!!

The fall 2014 4-H Paper Clover Campaign will end October 19, 2014, so only 5 days left.  The Terrell and Ennis stores will have the opportunity to support 4-H in Kaufman by choosing to purchase paper clovers for a $1 or more at checkout. All funds raised will be donated to 4-H, and will support 4-H in Kaufman County.  Please stop by and say thank you and also have a great time shopping some of their very cool fall specials.
